April 15, 2024


As we reflect on the many mercies of our God, thankfulness and gratitude should fill our every prayer.

Lamentations 3: 22-23

Because of the Lord's great love

we are not consumed,

for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

based on Lamentations 3: 22-23


Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father

there is no shadow of turning with thee;

thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not;

as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.


Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.


Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow

blessings all mine with ten thousand beside.


Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see

all I have needed, thy hand hath provided

great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Looking Back

In reviewing the history leading up to our current National Day of Prayer, we note:

On November 11, 1779 Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson signed a proclamation of Prayer, which stated: "Congress . . . hath thought proper . . . to recommend to the several States . . . a day of publick and solemn Thanksgiving to Almighty God, for His mercies, and of Prayer, for the continuance of His favour . . . that He would grant to His church, the plentiful effusions of Divine Grace, and pour out His Holy Spirit on all Ministers of the Gospel, that He would bless and prosper the means of education, and spread the light of Christian knowledge through the remotest corners of the earth."
